Lao Tzu’s ancient wisdom on the final stage of growth — and why this is the exact moment you take your 30-inch step and Cast Your Light.

I’m not going to lie to you, I am kind of infatuated with Lao Tzu.

His ancient wisdom on self-mastery, stillness, and inner power lines up perfectly with everything I lived for twenty years in the Marine Corps and everything I wrote in Cast Your Light. While the Corps taught me discipline from the outside, Lao Tzu showed me how to build that same unbreakable strength from within. That’s why he’s one of the Titans of Truth I keep coming back to — because real leadership and real growth aren’t about controlling others… they’re about finally mastering yourself.

That last line hits different.

It’s not just about finding mentors. It’s about the sacred moment when the external teacher steps aside because you’ve finally become your own greatest guide.

I’ve lived this truth.

In the preface of my book Cast Your Light, I wrote about the Titans of Truth — Sun Tzu, Marcus Aurelius, Lao Tzu, Zig Ziglar, and others whose wisdom I distilled through two decades as a United States Marine. Lao Tzu was always one of my favorites. His words reminded me that real power isn’t in mastering others — it’s in mastering yourself.

The Moment the Teacher Disappears

For years I had incredible teachers: Drill Instructors, senior Marines, recruiters, and mentors who poured into me. They appeared exactly when I was ready.

But there came a day — after retirement, after the uniform came off, after the structure I had known for half my life was gone — when the external voices grew quiet.

And in that silence, something profound happened.

The teacher disappeared.

Not because the wisdom left… but because it had finally moved inside me.

That’s when I understood the epigraph of Cast Your Light on a whole new level:

No more waiting for someone to tell me the next step. No more needing outside validation. The 30-inch step forward was now mine to take — every single day.

From Student to Master

In the book I share that true growth isn’t about collecting more teachers. It’s about reaching the point where you no longer need them to lead you.

You transform your “wants” into “intentions.” You stop waiting for motivation and start living from inner discipline. You become the leader you once looked up to.

This is the moment Lao Tzu describes — the beautiful, sometimes lonely threshold where the student steps into mastery.

It’s the same in-between space I wrote about before, only now the clay has been shaped. The vessel is complete. And it’s time to Cast Your Light.

The Invitation

If you’re standing in that quiet space right now — where the voices that once guided you have grown distant — celebrate it.

You’re not lost. You’re not abandoned.

You are ready.

The teacher has disappeared because you no longer need to be led. You are now the leader.

Take that full 30-inch step toward the greatest version of yourself.

See yourself with the good you desire. Turn every “want” into a powerful intention. And release your light into the world.

Because the world doesn’t need more students waiting for teachers. It needs more people who have become their own master — and who now shine brightly for others.

You’ve come far enough. The teacher has done their job.

Now it’s your turn.

Cast Your Light.

Cast Your Light: Take a Full 30-Inch Step Towards the Greatest Version of You is available now.

If this spoke to you, share it with someone who’s stepping into their own mastery.
