It Is Up To You to Cast Light Anyway

“I will not and can not believe that evil is the normal condition of mankind.” ~ Fyodor Dostoevsky
Dostoevsky wrote those words from the depths of his own crucibles — Siberian exile, the firing squad that didn’t fire, the epileptic seizures, the poverty, the gambling, the loss. He had every reason to accept darkness as the default setting of the human heart. He refused.
I refuse, too.
Not because I’m naive. Because I’ve walked through enough fire to know the difference between what is and what we settle for. And because the two books I’ve poured my life into — Cast Your Light and It Is Up To You — exist for one reason: to remind us that the turning point was never “out there.” It has always been in here. And it is up to you.
The Lie We’ve Been Sold
We are drowning in a culture that treats judgment, fear, division, cynicism, and cruelty as the baseline of human nature. Scroll long enough and you’ll start to believe it. Watch the news long enough and you’ll accept it. Stay in enough broken systems and you’ll defend it.
But Dostoevsky was right. Evil is not normal. It is common. It is loud. It is profitable. It is even addictive. But it is not the factory setting of the human soul.
The world does not disturb us. Only our judgments do. And with a single decision for love, every judgment can be undone.
That line from the epigraph of It Is Up To You is not poetry. It is a battle plan. It is the same defiant stance Dostoevsky took. It is the same 30-inch step every Marine learns on the yellow footprints at Parris Island: you don’t wait for the world to become worthy of your light. You cast it anyway.
The Crucible Does Not Normalize Evil — It Forges Light
I have written elsewhere about the crucible — the fire that melts you down, burns away what is false, and reshapes you into something strong enough to hold more pain and more light than you ever imagined. Pain is not proof that evil wins. Pain is the forge that proves you can still choose.
“The fire had never been my enemy. It was the crucible. It melted me down until I was hollow. It burned away everything that was weak or false. And slowly, painfully, it shaped me into a container — something strong enough to hold all the pain, all the lessons, and all the hard-won wisdom I had earned.” ~ From the preface to Crucible: Forged, Not Finished
If you are in the fire right now — the loss, the betrayal, the invisible wounds, the systems that have failed you, the voice that says “this is just how the world is” — hear me: You are not being destroyed. You are being forged.
And when the fire has done its work, you become the kind of person who can sit with someone else in their darkness without flinching… and still cast light.
That is not normal. That is possible. And possibility is the most dangerous idea on earth to those who profit from despair.
Willpower Is the Weapon They Can’t Take From You
In Cast Your Light I wrote:
“You are equipped with the most powerful weapon ever known to man. Its maximum range cannot be measured; its maximum effective range is determined by YOU. Its only safety is controlled by YOUR ambition. … That most powerful weapon is — WILLPOWER.”
They can take your title.
They can take your comfort.
They can take your reputation.
They cannot take your will.
Transform your “wants” into “intentions.” Do not want to live differently. Intend to live differently. Then take the step.
That single decision — repeated daily — is how we dismantle the lie that evil is normal. One trained mind. One healed perception. One act of love that undoes a judgment. One 30-inch step.
It Is Up To Us
The turning point is not out there — it is in here. It is up to you.
This is not a call to passivity. It is the most active, disciplined, courageous posture available to a human being: to refuse the normalization of darkness while still living fully inside a broken world. To discern right over wrong instead of left over right. To be patient and tough in the fire because someday this pain will be useful — not just to you, but to everyone you choose to pour strength into.
That is what Cast Your Light and It Is Up To You are really about. Not theory. Not performance. A daily apprenticeship in becoming the kind of person who makes evil abnormal simply by refusing to participate in it — and by casting light so consistently that others remember they have the same power.
Your Next 30-Inch Step
If Dostoevsky could stand in the snow of a Siberian prison and still write those words, what excuse do any of us have?
Name the darkness you’ve been normalizing. Ask what strength, wisdom, or capacity it is trying to forge in you. Then take one honest step toward the greatest version of you.
It might be a prayer. It might be a hard conversation. It might be finally opening the journal. It might be forgiving the person who doesn’t deserve it — because you deserve the freedom. It might be deciding that today, in this noisy season, you will choose character over performance, service over power, and light over the lie.
Whatever it is… take it.
Because the world does not need more people who have made peace with darkness. It needs more people who have decided, like Dostoevsky, like every Marine who ever earned the title, like every soul who has walked out of their own crucible:
I will not and cannot believe that evil is the normal condition of mankind.
And then they prove it — one 30-inch step at a time.
