Prune Me First, So I May Love Others as You Have Loved Me

Heavenly Father,

You are the Master Gardener of my soul.
You planted me in the soil of Your grace,
You watered me with Your mercy,
You built me up and let me grow tall in the light of Your love.

Then, in Your perfect wisdom, You took up the shears.
With careful, loving hands You pruned away what was dead,
what was overgrown, what was holding me back from bearing fruit.
It hurt. It humbled me. But it was love—
the deepest, truest kind of love.

Lord, teach me to love others the same way You have loved me.
Give me the courage to build people up,
to encourage their growth,
to celebrate their stretching toward the light.

And when the time comes, give me the wisdom and tenderness
to prune those I love most.
Not out of anger or control,
but out of holy care—
cutting away what is harmful,
what is distracting,
what is keeping them from becoming who You created them to be.

Let my love be strong enough to wound when necessary,
and gentle enough to heal afterward.
Let me never shrink back from the hard work of pruning
because I fear their pain or my own discomfort.

Help me remember that every cut You make in my life
has always been for my good and Your glory.
So let every word I speak, every boundary I set,
and every truth I lovingly deliver to others
flow from the same heart of love.

I surrender my relationships into Your hands.
Prune me first, Lord—
make me more like You—
so that I may prune others with the same patience,
the same precision,
and the same fierce, unwavering love
with which You have pruned me.

In the name of Jesus,
the True Vine who was pruned for our sake,
Amen.
